In 1857, he married Maggie McGrew, with whom he had eleven children. Thurmond became a salesman for Jesse O. Born in Tennessee in 1813, John Sutherland Menefee moved with his family to Jackson County, Texas, and he went on to play a role in several important military engagements in early Texas.
